One of the most widely used types of plug and socket, you'll find in applications from chemical plants to TV studios. The official title for this family is IEC 60309 "Plugs and socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purposes." In real life, you may call them by the manufacturers' range name. The most common term used in the UK is "Commando socket" based on the Commando plug and socket range developed by Mk Electric. Mennekes, Marechal, Bals and Ceeform are also well-known manufacturer ranges.
You may refer to them by the colour, current or voltage, e.g. 16A blue plug or yellow 110v plug. The actual application may be the association such as a blue caravan plug.
While IEC 60309 lays down the standards in terms of dimensions, current ratings and colour. The manufacturer determines the quality and performance. Like all plugs and sockets, there is a massive variance. You need three hands to wire some of the commodity products.
Lewden Palazzoli has over a century of experience making industrial connectors. Their latest XCEE range brings this wealth of experience together with the newest production techniques to create what could be the gold standard of industrial plugs.

Expanded IP ratings
Most ranges of Commando style 60309 sockets are available in IP44 or IP67 ratings. The XCEE range goes to IP69 an expanded capability allowing operating in areas subjected to high-temperature jets of water. Useful for applications within the food industry which need regular washdowns.
Robust construction
The vital bit for the end-user, how easy are they to use? The XCEE range has a great look and feel. A robust build quality, coupled with an ergonomic design. Industrial users will find them easy to connect even with gloved hands. Attention to detail, such as the tapered cable grip should ensure long service life. The plug and socket pins are nickel coated, as opposed to bare brass in low-cost plugs. This process reduces the contact resistance and makes them less likely to tarnish in industrial environments.
The gasket seals within the socket flaps are moulded as one component, so they can't fall off or loosen.
Easy to wire
From an installers viewpoint, it's the small details which make a difference. Screwless access to the wiring chamber speeds up the wiring time, flip up a locking tab and twist off the cap. Inside you'll find cage type wiring terminals so no risk of conductor damage. A chunky sealing gland which can be tightened with a spanner completes the package.
Introducing the Rotor switch
A world-first for the XCEE range is the option of an inline interlocked rotary switch. The Rotor switch locks the plug in-place so a load can't be disconnected when powered.
The Rotor switch is rated for AC23 duty allowing safe operation inductive loads such as motors or lighting.

Our verdict
A rock solid range of industrial plugs and sockets which are suitable for the most demanding applications. Much easier to wire than other commando style plugs on the market.
