New Rules: Thousands Of Electricians Unqualified Overnight
Thousands of electricians unqualified overnight
The latest eFIXX livestream sparked huge debate across the trade as we unpacked the most controversial rule changes electricians have faced in years. New updates will soon require sparks to hold specific qualifications before working on EV chargers, solar PV, and battery storage, with the rules kicking in from October next year. Supervisors and testers will also need two years’ experience, recognised qualifications, and proof of CPD. Even more urgently, from January, new applicants won’t be able to use LCL Awards Level 3 certificates—unless they complete them before the cut-off.
MCS suspends installers after they allegedly sell certs for cash
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has suspended three installers following an investigation into a cash-for-certificates scheme. The firms were found to have issued MCS certificates to a non-certified installer, enabling him to claim Boiler Upgrade Scheme vouchers from OFGEM. MCS says the installers did not carry out the heat pump installations, lacked customer contracts, and had no formal subcontracting agreements. Their certification and consumer code have been withdrawn to protect consumers.
Company fined after ‘wholly avoidable’ substation incident
A power firm has been fined £80,000 after a technician suffered life-changing injuries in an arc flash at the a Wind Farm near Inverness. The incident occurred in June 2020 when maintenance work was carried out on one electrical cabinet while another remained live - a deviation from the official switching programme.
An HSE investigation found that Natural Power Services Limited failed to ensure switching procedures were followed and had no formal process for approving changes. As a result, part of the system stayed energised during the work.

Bear on a power pole in Arizona
a spark actually rescued it...
An electrician in Arizona has been praised after saving a bear that climbed a power pole and was at serious risk of electrocution. Werner Neubauer quickly had the cables de-energised, then carefully helped the bear descend using a stick. The animal eventually dropped safely and ran off unharmed. His wife, Tina, captured the moment on her phone, turning a tense incident into a brilliant example of calm thinking and safe action.
